Five a Day -- That's what the experts say..
Those in the “know” recommend that adults consume at last five servings of fruits and veggies a day for optimal health and wellness. Have you eaten your daily allotment, today, yesterday or in the last week? With warm summer temperatures many of our fan favorites are in season and ripening fast. The local markets are practically giving away assortments of berries and melons not to mention corn on the cob and avocados.
My personal goal is to eat more vegetables, unlike fruit which is rather easy to eat on the go or as a quick snack; veggies take a little more time to prepare and enjoy. An interesting article featured on NPR (see link below) discusses veggies for breakfast, a novel and perhaps unappetizing idea to most Americans. Unfamiliarity is to blame, what with Denny’s Grand Slams and Egg McMuffins leading the American concept of the most important meal of the day. Vegetables are an essential component of many breakfasts around the world. Looking to up your intake like me? Perhaps including them, tastefully, in “the most important meal of the day” is an easy way to start?
