Why wait for adversity?

I attended college on the East coast. The school was on the coast of Maine. A number of us students were allowed to live off campus. Several summer homes were rented along a peninsula not far from the school. During the winter the area would get a good amount of snow fall. I remember one winter in particular we had a "northeaster " that dropped over 3 feet of snow.

After the storm we went out to shovel our driveway. A student from another house came over and told us he was also snowed in from the storm. He helped us shovel out our driveway, then we went to his house and shoveled out his driveway. A neighboring house of college students was in the same predicament so when we were done with the one driveway we went over and helped the neighboring folks as well. This process continued where the people whose driveway we shoveled went with us to help the next house that needed shoveling. By the end of the day, we had shoveled over 20 driveways and had over 30 people, students and towns people alike, working together as a team to overcome nature’s obstacle. When we were done we ordered a bunch a pizza (I’m sure some beer was involved too). The comradery, the sense of unity and the power of unity was a unique experience and a memory that will stay with me the rest of my life.

Why do we need adversity to bring us together?  There is such strength and unity when working together. Together we are stronger than each of us individually.
