The Nation's Greatest Springtime Celebration

National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates spring in Washington, DC is paying tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the gift of trees, begins on March 20, the first day of spring. The beauty of these trees not only magnify the beginning of spring but a friendship between two countries. This year festival commemorates the 100- year anniversary of the gift of trees from Tokyo to Washington, DC. The gift of trees is a true testament of the power of understanding and compassion especially among two very but similar countries with so much history. Today, more than a million people visit Washington, DC each year to admire the blossoming cherry trees and attend events that herald the beginning of spring in the nation’s capital.

After World War II, cuttings from Washington's cherry trees were sent back to Japan to restore the Tokyo collection that was decimated by American bombing attacks during the war.

The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom

In the midst of Tsunami that occurred in Japan on March 11, 2011 there was one cherry blossom tree that stood its ground and stood tall against the power of the tsunami. The majestic tree inspired hope to so many that lost so much. This nominated short documentary captures the essence of the cherry blossom and what it means to the people of Japan.

Take part of the celebration and enjoy the nature that surrounds us every day. Step back, tack a moment, clear your mind, take a deep breath and open your eyes to the beauty and nature this world has to offer. 

Spring Equinox

Not only is a celebration of a friendship but a celebration of spring equinox and rebirth or beginning of a new year. Every spring a cloud of pink rains down from the cherry blossom covering Tidal Basin creating a magical place of beauty, peace and sense of a new beginning.  Nearly 100 of the original trees are still alive and well at the Tidal Basin.  The beauty of this world is so breath taking it is difficult not to be amazed and in awe of it.

The celebration of spring equinox has been part of several cultures and religion for hundreds of years. Celebrating the admiration of nature, love of all things living, end of winter and full moon, and beginning of new life. The celebration of the spring equinox is something that connects the past, present, future of all nations. At this time we all come together as one to celebrate.
