Driven to Drive: Model X Crossover by Tesla Motors

Tesla Motors has challenged the status quo yet again with the Model X crossover.  In Hawthorne, California Thursday, February 9, 2012 was the unveiling of Model X prototype, at the Tesla Motors design studios. As the Model X rolled out onto the stage, like the Model S sedan seeing it for the first time it shattered any preconceptions of an electric car but most importantly about an electric crossover.

Built on the same platform as the model S, Model X has more functionality than a minivan, more style than a SUV and more performance than a sports car.

The design of Falcon Wing doors is very impressive but I can’t help to think of the DeLorean -12 DMC in the movie “Back to the Future”.  Falcon Wings open up and out of the way, in even the narrowest of parking spots. It offers accessibility and convenience for everything you do and third-row access is finally easy.

The Model X shares about 60 percent of its content with the Model S and weighs about 10 percent more. Optional Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive that is designed to increases torque by 50%. When outfitted with AWD, Model X Performance accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. Pricing will be similar to the Model S sedan and will start at $49,900 after a $7,500 federal tax credit, but the price can approach $100,000, depending on options. Tesla is taking reservations for deliveries of the signature edition in late 2013 and the production version in early 2014!

Good to see the dream of a new car company envisioned by Elon Musk with design in SoCal and manufacturing in East Bay at the old NUMMI plant in Fremont is energizing the next generation of engineers and manufacturing workers. At this stage the success of the Model X is hinged on how well Tesla builds and scale the organization to deliver the promise on it's initial platform, with the Model S .

What is your dream car? Express it!
