78% Of New Year's Resolutions Fail! - Why Not A New Approach?

A study conducted in 2007, by Richard Wisemen, from the University of Bristol showed that 78% of those who set New Year's resolutions fail, and those who succeed have 5 traits in common

  1. Focus on one resolution at a time, with short realization or milestones of 2-6 weeks
  2. Planning in advance, time to reflect and focus with clarity and commit to take action
  3. Avoid repeating a previous resolutions or at least try a different technique to succeed
  4. Keeping resolutions specific and reward for achieving weekly milestones
  5. Make it public, support from family, friends or a larger community like wishes4Life

A New Beginning - Time For Reflection

A key element to a New Year's Resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions, is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year, a new beginning. There are religious parallels to this secular tradition. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People may act similarly during the Christian fasting period of Lent, though the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility. Some cultures and religions observe New Year around the time of the Spring equinox as a time of rebirth and renewal. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.
